At Estonia's latitudes, clematis are among the most beautiful ornamental plants seen in decorative gardens – their twisting vines, variety of flowers and rich gamut of colours attracts the eye from their first bloom in July until the flowering of the last-blooming varieties in autumn.
The Clematis Garden that was created in 2006 at the Botanical Garden's gate facing the Emajõgi River introduces visitors primarily to local varieties. The foundations for clematis breeding in Estonia were laid by the Kivistik family – internationally recognised plant breeders who have created 146 varieties of clematis, of which more than 40 are cultivated in the Botanical Garden. The Clematis Garden features mostly large-flowered clematis hybrids, yet also includes small-flowered varieties originating in Estonia and elsewhere as well as other clematis species.
