Once in a century!
Umbrella bamboo (Fargesia nitida) is flowering in the Botanical Gardens of the University of Tartu.
Bamboos are famous for their gregarious flowering after long intervals. Bamboos have this cycle genetically coded and it does not matter were the plants grow, they start flowering all over the world during the same period. Umbrella bamboo has one of the longest flowering intervals (100 to 120 years). The plants die after flowering and new plants start growing from the seeds. In their natural distribution area in China, umbrella bamboos began to flower and die twelve years ago already, so the period of renovation from seeds lasts for approximately for another eight years.
