The University of Tartu Botanical Garden is hosting an exhibition dedicated to orchids for the twelfth time. The exhibition programme is enriched with exciting workshops and guided tours.
The ten-day orchid expo will showcase fascinating and regal orchids. After two years of absence, this much-anticipated annual spring event is back. The show includes species familiar from the windowsills of homes, as well as more unusual ones. The twelfth orchid exhibition is supported by Mark Frederik Peterson, Honorary Doctor and Visiting Professor at the University of Tartu.
The sun is already higher in the sky, and the tit makes its first vocal sounds. Many are longing for the first blossoms and fresh greenery. After the corona break, we are once again making the anticipation of spring lighter and inviting you to a blossoming and fragrant greenery flower in our greenhouse.
The twelfth orchid exhibition at the University of Tartu Botanical Garden, celebrating its 220th anniversary, will showcase oddly adapted orchids from different continents and habitats. There are species whose flowers you must look for with a magnifying glass and hybrids with ancestors from different families. It's worth a visit for any orchid lover!
During the orchid show, workshops will be held on Saturdays, 4 and 11 March, at 1 PM to introduce orchids and share tips on how to care for them. The workshop will be led by Anni Oja, who has been expanding her knowledge at the Lankester Botanical Garden in Costa Rica, where one of the main activities is the propagation and reintroduction of native orchids.
You can bring your orchids to the workshops, which can be transplanted into our substrates and pots. Up to 15 people can participate at a time, and there is a charge of €10 per person. Pre-registration is required at botaed@ut.ee or by calling +372 737 6180. For more information about the workshops, contact Anni Oja at cashmir@gmail.com.
In addition to the workshops, there will be guided tours of the exhibition on Sundays, 5 and 12 March, at 1 PM. Participating in the guided tours with an exhibition ticket requires no pre-registration.
In addition to the orchid exhibition, you can also see paintings with floral motifs by artist Ülle Järve in the Botanical Garden's classroom during the same time. The exhibition "A Blossom for Every Day" is open until 31 March.
The University of Tartu Botanical Garden's XIIth Orchid Exhibition takes place from 3-12 March. For the orchid exhibition, the Botanical Garden will be open a little longer than usual on working days: Mon-Fri 10-18, Sat-Fri 10-17. Entrance to the exhibition with a Botanical Garden ticket.
All orchid enthusiasts will be able to buy plants to take home. At the University of Tartu Botanic Garden, the Gardest Home and Garden Centre will sell orchids during the exhibition.
