The book "Dragonflies. The order Odonata in Estonia" contains descriptions of 63 species of dragonflies found in Estonia, together with about 450 colour photographs and distribution maps. There is also an identification table in Estonian and English with more than 200 illustrations, which can be used to identify both mature specimens and larvae of the last growth stage.

Dragonflies are some of the largest, most curious and fearless insects in the Estonian fauna. Among other things, they are very important for assessing the condition of water bodies - but to identify them, you need to know their body structure.

Author of the book Mati Martin

The introductory section provides an overview of the systematics, biology and ecology of dragonflies. A glossary of technical terms is provided. The book was published in spring 2022 as the fourth volume in the series "Estonian Biodiversity".

Mati Martin graduated as a biologist from the University of Tartu, where he also has been a lecturer. At the University of Tartu Natural History Museum and Botanical Garden he works as a zoological collections senior researcher in zoosystematics. Mati Martin has studied, photographed and introduced Estonian insects to the general public, compiled teaching materials and written several primary school textbooks. He has also edited the zoological terminology of many publications and published numerous popular science articles in journals. The book "Dragonflies. The order Odonata in Estonia" is the second book on zoological studies of dragonflies published by him.

The aim of the Estonian Museum Awards is to recognise the best museum professionals and to highlight different aspects of museum work to the public.

The awards are presented by the Estonian Museum Association in cooperation with the Museum Council of the Ministry of Culture, the Heritage Preservation Board and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. Each prize comes with a scholarship, funded by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.

The 2022 Annual Estonian Museum Awards received 70 applications, including 11 for the Research Paper Award. Nominees were selected in nine award categories in December. All the nominees can be found in Estonian on the website of the Estonian Museums Association. The winners will be announced on 19 January 2023 at Viimsi Artium in Tallinn. The gala will be preceded on the same day by the Annual Conference of Estonian Museums.
